The Haaretz daily newspaper said that the son of one of the founders of Hamas was a "spy" for the Israeli internal security agency (Shin Bet), and provided them with information that contributed to several arrests and stop of many suicidal attacks.

According to published reports, Mosab Hassan Yousef (32 years), the son of Sheikh Hassan Yusuf, a Hamas co-founders, helped the Israeli internal security agency to carry out a number of major arrests and prevent dozens of operations against Israel during the second intifada. In addition, his information led to the arrest of Ibrahim Hamed, a military commander of Hamas, Marwan Barghouti, who was the secretary of the Fatah movement, and Abdullah al-Barghouthi, a military commander of Hamas.
